Business Innovation Link is intended for the inventor or individual with a good product idea of patentable qualitywho is seeking technical advice and financial support towards intellectual property protection and possibly professional design input. Business Innovation Link brings a number of organisations together in the form of a panel to assess the idea based on the applicant's presentation; the degree of product innovation, and the likely commercial potential of the product.  Between them, these organisations offer a co-ordinated approach and many years experience in the area of product innovation.  Possible financial assistance (a "BIL award"), up to a maximum of £4,000, towards the costs necessary to achieve a first class prototype may be considered.

Compete Programme
Compete provides support for market-led innovative products and manufacturing processes. The programme has a Project Definitionphase (phase 1) and a Project Development Phase (phase 2). Applications can be submitted at any time.

Phase 1 –Provides financial assistance to prepare a detailed project plan and present the proposal to Invest NI to fund the main development phase (phase 2) of the programme. Phase 1 support is set up to 50% of eligible costs, up to a maximum of £15,000 grant.

Phase 2 –Assistance is normally set at up to 40% of eligible costs, up to a maximum grant of £250,000 per project.

Carbon Trust Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme
The Carbon Trust Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme can offer an interest free loan of up to £100,000 for manufacturing and non-manufacturing companies to support the installation of energy efficient measures that have a simple payback of 5 years or less. Eligible companies must be operating in Northern Ireland and have been trading for at least 12 months

Selective Financial Assistance
Invest NI may offer Selective Financial Assistance to client companies in the manufacturing and internationally traded service sectors, who bring forward projects which offer significant growth in turnover, profit and gross value added per employee. In addition, projects must enhance job skills and productivity. Assistance can be available in the form of capital and revenue grants with support dependent on the technology used, skills provision, and quality of jobs being created and the location within Northern Ireland.

SMART
Smart 1 is open to companies with less than 50 employees, partnerships and individuals with a highly innovative technical idea needing seed capital to prove the technology within their projects and to help bring them to commercial reality. Supported at a rate of 75% for projects costing at least £30,000 to a maximum of £60,000 and 6 to 18 months duration.
Smart 2 is eligible to applicants who have successfully completed a Smart 1 project. Supported at 40% for development projects with commercial potential costing at least £60,000 to a maximum of £262,500 and lasting between 6 and 36 months.

Smart Micro
Smart Micro provide 50% support for innovative technical projects with commercial potential costing at least £5,000 up to a maximum of £20,000 and lasting up to 12 months. It is open to individuals and companies with fewer than 10 people. Applicants must be resident and operating in Northern Ireland

START
The Start Programme offers financial support for technology based, industrially relevant, pre-competitive research. Discretionary financial assistance, normally at a rate of up to 40% of eligible costs, up to £2 million over 3 years, is available. Projects may be university/company partnerships, company only or in exceptional circumstances, universities only.

Green Technology Initiative (GTI)
The GTI provides NI companies with interest free loans to implement environmental initiatives and reduce operating costs. The programme offers up to £50,000 (repayable within 3 years) towards projects requiring capital investment. Measures eligible for support include the use of clean technologies to improve resource efficiency and the purchase of treatment plant and equipment to reduce waste and emissions to air and water.

Waste Management Industry Fund (WMIF)
The WMIF provides NI companies with capital grants towards projects that aim to develop sustainable markets for reused, recycled or recovered materials. Types of projects likely to receive support include materials recycling, composting and waste to energy systems.
